AStanding upright seems effortless, yet the body is never completely motionless. Even when a person tries to stand perfectly still, the body moves slightly forwards, backwards and from side to side, in a pattern that scientists call postural sway. … Rather than being a sign of weakness, sway is evidence that the nervous system is continually correcting the position of the body over its base of support, the area beneath and between the feet.
