C1 seviyesinde cleft sentences tanıtıldı: 'It is X that...' ve 'What X does is Y'. 'What happened was this: the phone rang', anlatıma dramatik bir açılış verir. 'The reason why she left is complicated', açıklama için hazırlık yapar. 'The thing is, we don't have the budget', konuşmada sık kullanılan bir açıklama giriş kalıbı. Ayrıca reversed pseudo-cleft yapısı vardır: 'A good night's sleep is what I need', cümlenin başı ve sonu yer değiştirir. C2 yazılı üretimde pseudo-cleft çok değerli; abartılı kullanıldığında yapay durur, doz önemlidir.
1) Standart pseudo-cleft: hatırlatma
Pseudo-cleft yapısı 'What + özne + fiil + is / was + vurgulanan öğe' şeklindedir. 'She wants a holiday' → 'What she wants is a holiday'. Vurgu cümlenin sonuna düşer: 'a holiday' dramatik bir şekilde öne çıkar. 'What' yerine 'where' ve 'how' da sınırlı biçimde kullanılabilir; 'why' ile çıplak cleft kurulmaz, onun yerine 'The reason why she left is ...' kalıbı tercih edilir. 'Where we need to focus is on long-term growth'. 'How he got the job was by knowing someone on the panel'. Yapının omurgası değişmez: wh-sözcüğü + yan cümle + to be + vurgulanan öğe.
2) Reversed pseudo-cleft
Standart: 'What she needs is support'. Reversed: 'Support is what she needs'. Cümlenin iki parçası yer değiştirir: vurgulanan öğe başa, wh-yan cümlesi sona. Bu yapı iki farklı vurgu düzeni kurar: standart varyantta odak sona toplanır, reversed varyantta odaklanan öğe en başa alınır. 'Patience is what the job requires' (Sabır, işin gerektirdiği şeydir) cümlesinde vurgulanan öğe 'patience' en başta, açıklama arkadan gelir. 'Independence was what she valued most', değer baştan verilir. Bu yapı konuşmada bir önceki cümlede geçen öğeyi başa alarak bağ kurar: 'She's exhausted.' → 'Rest is what she needs.'
Reversed pseudo-cleft
wh-yan cümlesi + is / was + odak (ya da tersi)
- Standart
- What + özne + fiil + is / was + öğe
- Reversed
- Öğe + is / was + what + özne + fiil
Couragecesaret is what we need now.
Cesaret, şimdi ihtiyacımız olan şeydir.
Reversed: öğe başta.
Honestydürüstlük is what she valueddeğer vermek above all.
En çok değer verdiği şey dürüstlüktü.
A clear strategystrateji is what the company lacksyoksun olmak, eksiği olmak.
Şirkette eksik olan şey net bir stratejidir.
Forgivenessaffetme was what she soughtaramak, not revengeintikam.
Aradığı şey affetmekti, intikam değil.
3) The thing is / what happens is: konuşma açılışları
Konuşmada pseudo-cleft yapıları özel bir 'açılış' işlevi görür. 'The thing is, ...' (mesele şu ki), 'What happened was (this): ...' (olan şu oldu), 'The point is, ...' (önemli olan), 'What I mean is, ...' (demek istediğim), 'What you need to understand is, ...' Hikâye anlatırken özellikle etkili: 'So what happened was this: I got there, and she was already gone'. What this study demonstrates is that...'. Konuşma dilinde 'the thing is' sıklıkla bir itirazın ya da açıklamanın girişidir: 'I'd love to come, but the thing is, I have work'. Konuşmada en sık duyacağın reversed biçim odakta bir işaret zamiri olanıdır: 'That's what I mean', 'That's exactly what happened', 'This is what worries me'. Buradaki 'that / this' bir önceki cümleyi işaret eder — reversed biçimin başa aldığı öğenin neden bilinen bilgi olduğunu en iyi bu kalıp gösterir.
Konuşma pseudo-cleft kalıpları
The thing is, we don't have the budgetbütçe for this.
Mesele şu ki bunun için bütçemiz yok.
İtiraz / açıklama girişi.
What happened was, the meetingtoplantı ran over by two hours.
Olan şu oldu, toplantı iki saat uzadı.
Hikâye girişi.
The point is, we need to acthareket etmek quicklyhızlıca.
Önemli olan hızlı hareket etmemiz gerektiğidir.
What I'm trying to say is, we misjudgedyanlış değerlendirmek the situation.
Söylemeye çalıştığım şey şu: durumu yanlış değerlendirdik.
That's exactly what I was afraid ofkorkmak.
Tam da korktuğum şey buydu.
Reversed: odakta işaret zamiri.
4) The reason why / the way / the place
Pseudo-cleft'in 'why', 'how', 'where', 'when' varyantlarında odak, 'is'ten sonra gelen öğedir: 'The reason why she left is that she felt undervalued' (Ayrılmasının sebebi, değer görmediğini hissetmesiydi). Odak yoksa yapı cleft değildir: 'Why she left is complex' cümlesinde 'complex' bir yüklem sıfatıdır, vurgulanan öğe değil. 'The way he solved it was by asking the customers' (Sorunu çözme biçimi müşterilere sormaktı). 'The place where they first met was a bookshop in Oxford'. 'The time when everything changed was 2020' = 'When everything changed was 2020'. Dikkat: 'The place where we met no longer exists' bir cleft DEĞİLDİR; orada 'be' + odak yoktur, yalnızca özne konumunda bir sıfat cümleciği vardır. 'The reason (that)' veya 'the reason why' yapısı özellikle akademik metinde çok doğal: 'The reason this approach failed is that it ignored context'.
The reason / the way / the place
The reasonsebep why he resignedistifa etmek was a disputeanlaşmazlık with the board.
İstifa etmesinin sebebi yönetim kuruluyla yaşadığı bir anlaşmazlıktı.
The way she handledhalletmek the crisiskriz was by delegatingyetki devretmek early.
Krizi halletme biçimi erkenden yetki devretmek oldu.
The place where we first mettanışmak was a small cafékafe by the river.
İlk tanıştığımız yer nehir kenarındaki küçük bir kafeydi.
The moment when it all clicked(kafada) oturmak, birden anlaşılmak was the night before the exam.
Her şeyin kafada oturduğu an sınavdan önceki geceydi.
Standart vs reversed pseudo-cleft
Aynı bilgi, iki farklı vurgu düzeniyle veriliyor. Standart yapıda odak sona toplanır; reversed yapıda odaklanan öğe en başa alınır.
Standart (vurgu sonda)
Dramatik; odak sona doğru birikir.
What the team needs is strong leadership.
Ekibin ihtiyacı olan şey güçlü liderlik.
What surprised me most was her calmness.
Beni en çok şaşırtan şey onun sakinliğiydi.
What the novel explores is the nature of memory.
Romanın incelediği şey belleğin doğası.
Reversed (vurgu başta)
Hızlı, doğrudan, açıklayıcı.
Strong leadership is what the team needs.
Güçlü liderlik ekibin ihtiyacı olan şey.
Her calmness was what surprised me most.
Sakinliği beni en çok şaşırtan şeydi.
The nature of memory is what the novel explores.
Belleğin doğası romanın incelediği şey.
5) All (that) pseudo-cleft: kısıtlama vurgusu
'All (that) ...' kısıtlama kalıbını C1'de gördün; bu yapı güçlü bir azaltma vurgusu taşır ('yalnızca bu kadar') ve genelde bir haksızlığa, yalnızlığa ya da yalın bir ihtiyaca gönderme yapar. C2'de işine yarayacak olan bu kalıbın olumsuz ve düzeltici biçimleridir: olumsuz wh-cleft, 'What I don't understand is why nobody spoke up'; düzeltme kalıbı, 'It's not that we lack money; it's that we lack trust'. Odakta 'do' fiili varsa infinitive 'to' almaz: 'All we can do is wait' (to wait değil), 'All you have to do is press the button', 'What she did was call him'. Bu, kalıbın en sık hatasıdır. Odakta 'do' yoksa 'to' gelir: 'What I want is to leave'. 'The only thing (that)' bu kalıbın aynı anlama gelen daha resmi varyantıdır: 'The only thing I remember is the music'. Dikkat: 'what' belirli bir kişiye gönderme yapmaz. 'What helped me was my sister' değil, 'The one who helped me was my sister' ya da 'The person who helped me was my sister'. İnsan odağı için it-cleft de doğaldır: 'It was my sister who helped me'. ('What we need is a good lawyer' gibi rol anlatan kullanımlar bunun dışındadır.)
All (that) kalıpları
All they left behindgeride bırakmak was a note on the table.
Geride bıraktıkları tek şey masadaki bir nottu.
All that mattersönemli olmak now is the future.
Şimdi önemli olan tek şey gelecek.
What I can't acceptkabul etmek is being ignoredgörmezden gelinmek.
Kabul edemediğim şey görmezden gelinmektir.
All you need to know is that the answercevap is yes.
Bilmen gereken tek şey cevabın evet olduğudur.
All you have to do is pressbasmak the button.
Yapman gereken tek şey düğmeye basmak.
'do is' sonrası çıplak infinitive: 'to press' değil.
'What impressed me was not just her intelligence, but also her humility' (Beni etkileyen yalnızca zekası değil, aynı zamanda alçakgönüllülüğüydü). 'What the report lacks, and what the committee demands, is clarity'. Bu yapı paralel vurgu kurar; iki öğe aynı cümlede vurgulanır. 'What matters is not what you say but what you do' (Önemli olan söylediğin değil, yaptığındır): tek bir 'is' iki odağı 'not ... but ...' ile karşı karşıya getirir.
Extended pseudo-cleft
What inspiredilham vermek her was not wealthzenginlik, but purposeamaç.
Ona ilham veren zenginlik değil, amaçtı.
What the countryülke needs, and what the peoplehalk demandtalep etmek, is reform.
Ülkenin ihtiyacı ve halkın talep ettiği şey reformdur.
What he wantedistemek was recognitiontakdir; what he gotalmak was silencesessizlik.
İstediği takdirdi; aldığı sessizlik oldu.
Hızlı pratik: Pseudo-cleft formları

Ters çevir: 'What she values most is honesty.' →
'What this study shows is that...' (Bu çalışma şunu gösteriyor). 'What is needed is further investigation'. 'What distinguishes this approach from previous ones is its focus on...'.
Akademik pseudo-cleft
What this findingbulgu suggestsima etmek is that previous assumptionsvarsayımlar were misplacedyersiz, asılsız.
Bu bulgunun ima ettiği şey önceki varsayımların yanlış olduğudur.
What distinguishesayırt etmek this theoryteori is its predictiveöngörücü power.
Bu teoriyi ayırt eden şey öngörücü gücüdür.
What remainskalmak to be investigatedaraştırılmak is the long-term impactetki.
Yanlış kullanım: What I need is you listen to me.
Doğru kullanım: What I need is for you to listen to me.
Odak bir eylemse 'is'ten sonra infinitive gelir: 'What she did was call him' (çıplak), 'What I want is to leave'. Eylemin öznesi farklıysa 'for + özne + to' kullanılır: 'What I need is for you to listen'. What this shows is that we were wrong'.
Wh-yan cümlesine soru sırası taşımak
Yanlış kullanım: What does she want is a holiday.
Doğru kullanım: What she wants is a holiday.
Pseudo-cleft'in 'what' bölümü soru değil, yan cümledir: soru sırası ve 'do / does / did' yardımcısı buraya girmez. Reversed biçimde de sıra aynıdır: 'A holiday is what she wants'.
Aşırı pseudo-cleft kullanımı
Yanlış kullanım: What I want is a coffee. What I want next is a meal. What we'll do after that is find a table.
Doğru kullanım: I want a coffee, then a meal. After that, we'll find a table.
Pseudo-cleft dramatik araçtır; her cümlede kullanılırsa yapay durur.
Ek pratik: Karma pseudo-cleft
1 / 3
Uyum: 'What we need ___ new ideas.'
