Question tag, bir ifadenin sonuna eklenen kısa sorudur. 'You're coming tonight, aren't you?' cümlesindeki 'aren't you?' kısmı bir question tag'dir.

Question tag nedir?

'You are tired, aren't you?' cümlesindeki 'aren't you?' bu yapıdır.

Kullanım amacı iki türlü olabilir. Birincisi: gerçek bir soru, yani yanıt beklenen. 'You speak English, don't you?'

'Nice weather, isn't it?'

  • You're a student, aren't you?

    Öğrencisin, değil mi?

    Olumlu + olumsuz tag.

  • He doesn't drink coffee, does he?

    Kahve içmiyor, değil mi?

    Olumsuz + olumlu tag.

  • They have finished, haven't they?

    Bitirdiler, değil mi?

    Present Perfect + haven't they.

  • You can swim, can't you?

    Yüzebiliyorsun, değil mi?

    Modal + modal tag (can/can't).

Temel kural

Olumlu cümle + olumsuz tag / Olumsuz cümle + olumlu tag

Cümle ve tag'in kutupları terstir. Tag aynı zamana uyar, aynı yardımcı fiili kullanır, özneyi zamir olarak alır. 'She is tired, isn't she?' cümlesinde özne 'she' hem cümlede hem tag'de. Yardımcı fiil 'is' tag'de 'isn't' olur.

Ters kutup mantığı

Question tag'in en temel kuralı terslik ilkesidir. Cümle olumlu ise tag olumsuz, cümle olumsuz ise tag olumlu olur. Bu kural neredeyse hiç bozulmaz; aynı kutbun kullanıldığı nadir kalıplar teyit tag'i sayılmaz.

'He plays tennis' (olumlu) → 'doesn't he?' (olumsuz tag). 'He doesn't play tennis' (olumsuz) → 'does he?' (olumlu tag).

'He never calls me, does he?' cümlesinde 'never' olumsuzluk verir, tag 'does he?' olumlu.

Aynı kural şu sözcükler için de geçerlidir: 'few' (az sayıda), 'little' (az miktarda), 'hardly' / 'hardly any' / 'hardly ever' ve 'scarcely' (neredeyse hiç), 'rarely' / 'seldom' (nadiren), 'none of' (hiçbiri), 'neither of' (ikisi de değil), 'nowhere' (hiçbir yer). Cümlede 'not' görünmese bile bunlar cümleyi anlamca olumsuz yapar ve tag olumluya döner: 'Few people noticed, did they?', 'Hardly any tickets were left, were they?', 'She had nowhere to go, did she?'. Dikkat: 'a few' ve 'a little' olumlu anlamdadır; onlarda tag normal kuralla olumsuz olur: 'A few students came, didn't they?'.

Kutup değişimi örnekleri

  • She works here, doesn't she?

    Burada çalışıyor, değil mi?

    Olumlu → doesn't.

  • You didn't see the movie, did you?

    Filmi görmedin, değil mi?

    Olumsuz → did.

  • She has been to Paris, has she?

    Paris'e hiç gitmemiş, değil mi?

Never → olumsuz anlam → olumlu tag (has she).

  • Nobody called, did they?

    Kimse aramadı, değil mi?

Nobody olumsuz, did they olumlu tag.

Yardımcı fiil seçimi

Tag'de hangi yardımcı fiilin geleceği, ana cümlenin yapısına bağlıdır. Eğer cümlede zaten bir yardımcı fiil varsa (is, are, was, were, have, has, had, will, can, must vb.), aynısı tag'de tekrar kullanılır. Dikkat: 'have / has / had' yalnız yardımcı fiilken tag'de tekrarlanır: 'She has finished, hasn't she?'. 'have' ana fiilse (sahip olmak ya da bir eylemi yapmak) tag do/does/did ile kurulur: 'They have two cars, don't they?', 'He had a shower, didn't he?'.

'She is cooking' → 'isn't she?'. 'They have arrived' → 'haven't they?'. 'He will come' → 'won't he?'. 'You can drive' → 'can't you?'.

Eğer cümlede yardımcı fiil yoksa (Present Simple veya Past Simple'ın olumlu hâli), do/does/did devreye girer. 'She works here' → 'doesn't she?'. 'He went home' → 'didn't he?'. 'They like pizza' → 'don't they?'.

Question tag'lerin bazı özel kullanımları vardır; kurala uymasa bile ezbere bilinmeli.

Birincisi: 'I am' ile biten cümlelerde tag 'aren't I?' olur. Mantıken 'amn't I?' olmalıydı ama İngilizce bu formu kullanmaz. 'I am late, aren't I?' doğrudur.

İkincisi: 'Let's' ile başlayan öneriler için tag 'shall we?' olur. 'Let's go to the park, shall we?' kibar bir teklif dilidir.

Üçüncüsü: Emir cümlelerinde (imperative) tag'in öznesi her zaman 'you'dur, ama hangi yardımcı fiilin geleceği emrin kutbuna bağlıdır. OLUMLU emirde 'will you?', 'won't you?', 'can you?' ve 'could you?' dördü de kullanılır; aralarındaki fark tondadır: 'Close the door, will you?' nötr bir ricadır, 'Come in, won't you?' daha davetkârdır, 'can/could you?' daha kibar bir istektir. OLUMSUZ emirde ise yalnız 'will you?' kullanılır: 'Don't forget, will you?' doğrudur; 'Don't forget, won't you?' kurulmaz.

Dördüncüsü: özne 'somebody', 'someone', 'everybody', 'everyone', 'nobody', 'no one' gibi belirsiz zamirlerse, tag'de 'they' kullanılır. 'Somebody called, didn't they?', 'Nobody knows, do they?'.

'Nothing happened, did it?', 'Something is wrong, isn't it?'.

Altıncısı: özne 'this' veya 'that' ise tag'de 'it', 'these' veya 'those' ise 'they' kullanılır. 'That's your bag, isn't it?', 'These are new, aren't they?'.

Özel durumlar örnekleri

  • I'm right, aren't I?

    Haklıyım, değil mi?

    I am → aren't I.

  • Let's go to the cinema, shall we?

    Sinemaya gidelim, olur mu?

    Let's → shall we.

  • the , will you?

    Tuzu uzatır mısın?

    Emir + will you.

  • Nobody said anything, did they?

Kimse bir şey söylemedi, değil mi?

    Nobody → did they.

  • Something strange happened, didn't it?

Tuhaf bir şey oldu, değil mi?

    Something → did it.

I'm next , ___?

'You aren't coming, are you?' sorusuna gelmiyorsan 'No, I'm not.' dersin; geliyorsan 'Yes, I am.'

'You'd better go' cümlesindeki kısaltma 'you had better' demektir; 'gitsen iyi olur' anlamında bir uyarı-tavsiye kalıbıdır (ayrıntısını C1'deki Advanced Modals dersinde göreceksin). Tag bu gizli 'had'den türer: 'hadn't you?'. Aynı kısaltma 'She'd rather stay' cümlesinde 'she would rather' ('kalmayı tercih eder') demektir; orada tag 'wouldn't she?' olur. Yani apostroflu 'd' iki farklı fiili gizler; hangisinin gizlendiğini tag ele verir.

'Needn't' ('gerek yok'; 'doesn't need to' ile aynı işi görür) olumsuz bir modaldır, tag'i olumlu modalle kurulur: 'He needn't come, need he?'. Bu kalıp resmidir ve seyrek duyulur; günlük dilde 'He doesn't need to come, does he?' daha yaygındır. 'Ought to' için doğru tag 'oughtn't + özne'dir; günlük dilde 'shouldn't' da yaygın kabul görür.

'There' ile kurulan cümlelerde tag'in öznesi yine 'there' kalır: 'There used to be a cinema here, didn't there?', 'There've been some changes, haven't there?'.

'Might' ile tag 'mightn't + özne' olur: 'Felix might know the answer, mightn't he?'. Bu biçim kitabidir, konuşma dilinde seyrek duyulur.

Son olarak 'must' iki farklı iş yapar. Zorunluluk bildiriyorsa tag 'mustn't' olur: 'We must hurry, mustn't we?'. Ama çıkarım bildiriyorsa ('must be' = kesin öyledir), tag çıkarılan fiilden gelir: 'He must be tired, isn't he?' — 'mustn't he?' değil.

You'd better call her, ___?

Tonlama: gerçek soru mu, onay mı?

Question tag'in anlamı tonlamayla belirlenir. İki farklı tonlamayla söylenebilir ve her biri farklı niyet taşır.

Yükselen tonlama (rising intonation): gerçek bir soru. Konuşan cevabı bilmiyor, teyit istiyor. 'You're coming, aren't you?' yükselen tonla söylenirse 'geleceğinden emin değilim, söyleyebilir misin?' anlamı taşır.

Düşen tonlama (falling intonation): onay arıyor. Konuşan zaten biliyor, sadece dinleyicinin aynı düşüncede olduğunu teyit ediyor. 'Nice day, isn't it?' düşen tonla söylenirse 'hava güzel, sen de kabul edersin' anlamı taşır.

Yanlış kullanım: You are a doctor, are you?

Doğru kullanım: You are a doctor, aren't you?

Teyit isteyen tag'de cümle ve tag'in kutupları terstir: olumlu cümle → olumsuz tag. 'Are you?' aynı kutupta olduğu için teyit tag'i değildir; şaşkınlık ya da şüphe bildiren farklı bir yapıdır ('So you're a doctor, are you?'). Teyit istiyorsan 'Aren't you?' kullanılır.

  • Yanlış yardımcı fiil

Yanlış kullanım: She plays tennis, isn't she?

Doğru kullanım: She plays tennis, doesn't she?

Cümlede 'plays' Present Simple ve yardımcı fiil yok. Bu yüzden tag'de do/does gerekir: 'doesn't she?'. 'Isn't she?' yanlış çünkü cümlede 'be' fiili hiç geçmiyor; ana fiil 'plays' ve tag için gereken yardımcı fiili do/does sağlar.

  • 'amn't I' kullanmak

    Yanlış kullanım: I'm right, amn't I?

    Doğru kullanım: I'm right, aren't I?

'Amn't' İngilizcede standart bir form değildir. 'I am' için tag 'aren't I?' olur. Bu tek istisnayı ezberle: 'I am' → 'aren't I?'. İrlanda İngilizcesinde 'amn't' duyulabilir ama standart İngilizcede kullanılmaz.

  • Her cümleye aynı tag'i eklemek

Yanlış kullanım: They are coming tomorrow, isn't it?

Doğru kullanım: They are coming tomorrow, aren't they?

Yardımcı fiil cümleden ('are'), özne de cümlenin öznesinden ('they') gelir. 'Isn't it?' yalnızca tag'in öznesinin 'it' olduğu olumlu 'is' cümlelerinde doğrudur: özne 'it', 'this', 'that', 'something' ya da insan dışındaki tekil bir isim olduğunda. 'It's cold, isn't it?', 'The film is boring, isn't it?'. ('Nothing' olumsuz anlam taşıdığı için tag olumlu olur: 'Nothing is wrong, is it?')

Tag oluşturma adımları

  • Adım 1: kutupCümle olumlu mu olumsuz mu? Tag kutup olarak ters olur.
  • Adım 2: yardımcı fiilCümlede zaten var mı? Evetse aynısını kullan. Yoksa do/does/did seç.
  • Adım 3: özneCümlenin öznesini zamire çevir: The boys → they, My sister → she.
  • Özel durumlarI am → aren't I. Let's → shall we. Don't → will you. Somebody/nobody → they. This/that → it, these/those → they.
  • TonlamaYükselen = gerçek soru. Düşen = onay arıyor.

Özet

  • Question tag: cümlenin sonuna eklenen mini soru. Türkçe 'değil mi?' karşılığı.
  • Temel kural: olumlu cümle + olumsuz tag, olumsuz cümle + olumlu tag.
  • Yardımcı fiil: cümlede varsa aynısı, yoksa do/does/did.
  • Özne tag'de zamirdir (he, she, they, it).
  • Özel: I am → aren't I. Let's → shall we. Olumlu emir → will/won't/can/could you; olumsuz emir → yalnız will you. Somebody/nobody → they. This/that → it, these/those → they.
  • Anlamca olumsuz sözcükler (never, no, nobody, nothing, few, little, hardly, scarcely, rarely, none of, neither of, nowhere) tag'i olumluya çevirir.
  • İleri tag'ler: ought to → oughtn't/shouldn't, 'd better → hadn't, would rather → wouldn't, needn't → need, There used to be → didn't there, must be (çıkarım) → isn't.
  • Tonlama: yükselen = gerçek soru, düşen = onay arama.
  • Cevapta 'yes' hep olumlu, 'no' hep olumsuz cümleyle gelir: 'You aren't coming, are you?' → 'No, I'm not.'
